A friend’s beautiful salute to Nelson Mandela

It’s been almost five years since I stopped following the ‘news’. I believe it’s given me more peace, more creativity, and the confidence that I’m not missing a thing. I feel more instead of less connected to life. I’ve also gained the highest quality curated news channel I could ever imagine: close friends. They seem to filter out the junk and pass on the real stuff, enriching it with how they feel about it. This morning for example.

It’s around 11:30 a.m. A friend and I have been working on the final edit for a series of short films. We’re taking a break and this is what my friend says: “I shed a couple of tears last night when I heard of Nelson Mandela’s death. The way he walked through life, surviving what he did, spending all those years in prison, staying true to what he believed in, supporting his people all the way, and then coming out with just one thing on his mind: peace and reconciliation… Such an incredibly powerful human being.”

That went straight to the heart. A beautiful salute, and a beautiful way to receive breaking news.
